ArtHaus presents its next Poetry Slam Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. This energetic spoken-word event has become so popular that ArtHaus now regularly holds the Slam at Decorah's Elks Lodge (402 W. Main St.) to accommodate a larger crowd.
The ArtHaus Poetry Slam is sponsored by Dragonfly Books.
The evening is divided into three categories: Featured Artist, Original Voices, and the Slam itself. This month, ArtHaus is delighted to present local poet and poetry slam winner Charlie Langton as the evening's featured artist. Charlie Langton describes himself as "the paunchy curmudgeon who terrorizes wee children on the streets of Decorah." His credits also include an MFA from the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop and a published book of poems called "Keep Silence, But Speak Out."
Following the featured artist, "Original Voices" offers an opportunity for anyone to perform two minutes or less of their own poetry. The final event, "The Slam," invites participants to perform two minutes or less of original poetry in a high-spirited, good-natured competition, complete with applause-o-meter and prizes. Memorization is encouraged in this category, where performance and commitment are valued as much as the quality of the poem.
Those wishing to perform in "Original Voices" or to compete in "The Slam" should call ArtHaus in advance to reserve a spot. To sign up, or for more information, call ArtHaus at 563-382-5440. The show begins at 8. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. The event is recommended for adults, age 16 and up.
