The Decorah High School Wind Ensemble was one of six high school bands invited to participate in the inaugural UNI Northern Iowa Band Invitational Thursday, March 14.
This "invitation only" event highlighted some of the top high school bands in the state of Iowa. Other bands involved include: Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, Johnston High School, Humboldt High School, Grinnell High School, Hampton High School and DHS.
Each band had a one-hour performance time on the stage of the Great Hall in the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus.
Following their performance each ensemble received individual critiques from the three resident UNI instrumental ensemble conductors: Dr. Ronald Johnson - director of bands, Dr. S. Danny Galyen - associate director of bands, and Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt - director of orchestral studies. Video and audio recordings will be made of each ensemble's performance.
"This is a great honor for our program to be invited to participate in this event," DHS band director James Fritz said. "When I asked why we were selected I was told it was due to the high quality of music education which had been demonstrated over many years here at Decorah. We're real excited about the opportunity to perform as the Gallagher Bluedorn facility is one of the finest performance venues in the state. We are delighted to have been selected."
Fritz is in his 27th year at DHS.
The DHS Wind Ensemble performed at 10:10 a.m. Thursday.
The performance was free and open to the public.
