The Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform their homecoming concert at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, March 28, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is the culmination of Jazz Orchestra's 2017 Colorado and Midwest Tour.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission, and will be streamed live at stream.luther.edu/music.
The program features a variety of exciting jazz repertoire including works by Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Bill Holman, Astor Piazzolla, Fred Sturm and many others. Luther jazz faculty member Jon Ailabouni will give featured performances on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Jazz Orchestra, Luther's premier jazz ensemble, travels annually and tours abroad every four years, most recently in May/June 2016 to Brazil for a three-week, 13-performance immersion in the musical cultures of Rio de Janeiro and the northeastern states of Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. The ensemble also traveled to Brazil in 2012 and 2008 and toured the Dominican Republic in 2004 and 2000.
Students of jazz at Luther have the opportunity to participate in two jazz bands, a vocal jazz ensemble, and jazz combos, register for studio lessons in improvisation, and take courses in jazz improvisation, composition, arranging and history.
In February 2017, Guzmán was named the Weston Noble Endowed Chair in Music; he also serves as director of the jazz program and professor of music education at Luther. A sought-after conductor of all-state and honor choirs, concert bands, jazz bands and symphony orchestras across the United States, he frequently serves as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator at festivals across North America, Central and South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
He has recently performed clinics and presentations for the Dominican Republic National System of Youth Orchestras, the World Choral Symposium, the Music Educators National Conference, Associação de Regentes de Corais do Brasil, The Association of British Choral Directors, the Scottish Association for Music Education and the Festival 500 in Canada.
