Forty-eight descendants of Frank and Mary (Franzen) Riha met July 15, 2012, to celebrate the 50th Annual Riha Reunion.
Hosted by the Leonard and Millie Riha family of Monona, Wis., reunion members shared the joys of being together and comforted each other at the news of the passing of their senior member, James Croatt.
James, the oldest son, passed away the morning of July 15, his 97th birthday.
Special 50th Reunion coasters were given to each family.
The coasters were the work of Paul and Claudia Riha of Carlsbad, Calif. Also on display were pictures of the original farm place of Frank and Mary Riha of Waucoma, their wedding pictures and other family pictures. These inspired stories of yesterday by those attending including the fact that 50 years ago six grandchildren were born in the year 1962.
Millie Riha, the hostess, was the oldest member attending the reunion and 2-year-old Tyler Goeden, son of Tucker Goeden of Milwaukee, was the youngest.
Most family members live in Iowa and surrounding states, but Paul and Claudia Riha from Carlsbad, Calif., traveled the longest distance to attend the reunion.
Frank and Mary (Franzen) Riha raised nine children on their farm on Usher Road outside Waucoma.
Frank died in 1959; Mary in 1963. Four of their nine children remain and attended the reunion: Barbara of Fort Atkinson (husband Jim Jirak); Leonard of Monona, Wis. (wife Millie Murphy); Francis of Waucoma (wife Jeannie Hoey); and Daniel of Waucoma (wife Shirley Wichman).
Relatives of other deceased siblings also attended included Mary McEnaney Riha wife of Matthias (deceased) of Cresco and members from the families of Loretta of Fort Atkinson (husband Alex Rausch), both deceased, and Angela of Milwaukee, Wis. (husband William Brannon) also both deceased.
The family of Barbara and Jim Jirak will host the 51st Riha Reunion in 2013.
