The Decorah Human Rights Commission is sponsoring a film and discussion series this spring and early summer.

Each of the 7 p.m. Monday screenings is on the 2nd floor of the Decorah Public Library, 202 Winnebago St. This is an opportunity to view three separate films followed by a discussion on diversity, inclusion and equality in our community.

The free events are open to the public and intended for adults and older students.

On April 8, the film is "At The Second Traffic Light," a film by Lucy Gebre-Egziabher.

An accident blocks traffic at an intersection and forces individuals from different backgrounds, who would ordinarily have nothing to do with each other, to interact and to resolve the situation. Discussion leader is Decorah Human Rights Commissioner Sheila Radford-Hill.

On May 6, the film "Rebirth" by Waterloo filmmaker Francesca Soans is being presented. Local actors from Decorah and surrounding communities challenge our view of small town America. The film explores difference and prejudice that culminate on Memorial Day as two women face a moment of truth. Filmmaker/Producer Francesca Soans will facilitate the discussion.

On June 10, the film "No Dumb Questions" by Melissa Regan will be shown. This documentary is three young girls, ages 6, 9 and 11, struggling to understand why and how their Uncle Bill is becoming a woman. Commission Member Amalia Vagts will lead this discussion.

According to Radford-Hill, "The Mission of the Decorah Human Rights Commission is 'to increase community awareness and appreciation of human diversity through educational programs, and to investigate alleged claims of discriminatory practices and provide appropriate remedies where discrimination has been found to exist.' We look forward to a great film series with the focus being diversity, inclusion and equality. An open mind and interest in community development will make for a great series."

Light refreshments will be served at each screening.
