Decorah High School marching band receives 12th consecutive Division I rating

The Decorah High School "Pride of the Vikings" Marching Band received its 12th consecutive Division I rating at the Iowa High School Music Association State Marching Band Festival.
The competition was held at Waterloo Memorial Stadium in Waterloo Saturday, Oct. 12.
The 125-member band performed the music of Stevie Wonder in their show entitled: "Grit, Love, and Groove," which featured the following hits: "Living for the City," "Higher Ground," "You Haven't Done Nothin'," "I Wish," "Send One Your Love," "Part-Time Lover," "I Just Called To Say, 'I Love You'," "Boogie On Reggae Woman," "Sir Duke" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours."
The music had been specially arranged for the band by Steve Shanley, professor of music at Coe College.
The 2013 drum majors were Alexis Hove - Senior, Talia Raddatz - Junior and Brad Suhr - Senior. The colorguard captains were: Seniors - Brianna Burke, Carli Galligan, Lexi Holm and Makenzie Wieseler.
Soloists included: Keeley Greco - Junior on Mellophone, Maleah Garwood - Senior on Baritone Horn, and Madison Ihde - Junior on trumpet. The Sir Duke combo soloists included: Hayley Miller - Junior on Piccolo, Kelly Minear - Senior on Clarinet, Ashley Gulrud - Sophomore on Alto Saxophone, Tyler Lubke - Junior on Trumpet, Hannah Hougen - Senior on Mellophone, and Fred Paulson - Junior on Sousaphone. Pas de Deux dancers included: Brianna Burke - Senior and Jeremy Jostand - Junior.
The Decorah High School Marching Band is under the direction of James Fritz, with assistance by Matt Cody.
The drumline is directed by Jerry Dean (JD). The colorguard is directed by Elizabeth Fritz.
The final 2013 performance of the DHS Marching Band is Friday, Oct. 19, at the home game against Oelwein. It is also band parents night in which all of the seniors and their parents will be recognized following the halftime performance.
