The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department received a report about a possibly sick and overly aggressive adult coyote from a man who was walking his two dogs on the Rock Road Trail in Van Peenen Park north of Decorah Saturday.
No one was injured and the dogs were not attacked by the coyote, but the animal did follow them for several hundred yards along the Rock Road Trail.
The area was checked by law enforcement officials, but the coyote was not located.
The Sheriff's Department is advising the public that several species of wild animals with young offspring can be protective if they feel threatened by pets. Report any unusual or sick acting wild animals to local law enforcement and to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The department also reminds the public to be aware of their surroundings and have a plan of what to do if something happens. It's also good to let others know where you are going and what time you'll be back, since cell phone and Global Positioning System devices don't always work.
