The Decorah City Council has decided to fill the Ward 2 vacancy on the Council by appointment.

At its meeting Monday night, Council member Gary Rustad, serving as mayor pro tem in the absence of Mayor Don Arendt, said that would save the city the expense of a special election. Earlier this month, Council member Julie Fischer had to vacate the position after moving out of Ward 2.

Ward 2 residents interested in filling the position should submit a letter of interest to the city by Friday, May 31, at 5 p.m. Letters should include a brief background and reasons for wanting to serve on the Council. They should be addressed to the City of Decorah, 400 Claiborne Dr., PO Box 138, Decorah, IA 52101.

A map of the city's wards is posted on the home page of the city's website, decorahia.org. Ward 2 is east of River Street, south of Water Street, west of Fair and Pearl streets to Highway 9 and west of Pleasant Avenue.

Whoever is appointed will be up for re-election this fall. The Council is expected to select the Ward 2 Council member by ballot at its Monday, June 3, meeting.
