John Franzen has resigned from his Ward 1 seat on the Decorah City Council.
At its meeting next week, the Council will decide whether to fill the vacancy through an appointment or by a special election. Earlier this month, the Council appointed Jody Niess to fill a Ward 2 vacancy, created when Julie Fischer moved out of her ward.
Niess, and whoever fills the Ward 1 vacancy, will be up for re-election at this fall's city election. Council members serve four-year terms.
Franzen has taken a new job that has travel requirements that will make him unable to continue to serve on the Council, according to City Manager Chad Bird.
