Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity (WCHH) has received a major contribution from the ALCO store in West Union.
The donation is in the form of home improvement supplies valued at $7,000. Many of these items will be available for sale at Decorah's Ridiculous Day Saturday, July 20, at 401 W. Water St. Others will be stored to use as Winneshiek Habitat builds its homes each year.
"I was surprised to receive a call from the manager of the ALCO store offering us the supplies. I knew that we couldn't use all of them as we just build one house a year. Still it was an opportunity for fundraising so we gladly accepted their generous offer," said Gus Johnson, executive director of WCHH.
More than they can use
The WCHH fund-raising committee chaired by Ken Vande Berg decided to also offer some of the items donated through the years by individuals.
"Although we appreciate the donations such as light fixtures, we can only use some of them in the houses," he said.
The sale will feature many items that can be used for home repairs such as washing machine inlet hoses and toilet repair kits. For those less handy, there are surge protectors and light bulbs. Larger items include countertops, a vanity and assorted cabinets. A complete listing can be found on the Winneshiek Habitat website, www.winneshiekhabitat.org and a partial listing will be in a Decorah Newspapers ad in the Thursday, July 18, Journal and on flyers around town.
Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity will build its 27th home in Ridgeway later this summer. The house will be built on the addition named for the late Don Kemp who was the first director of Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity.
The goal for Habitat is to work in partnership with people in need to build or renovate decent, affordable housing for them. The houses are sold to low-income working families at no profit and with no interest charged.
Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH) is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization.
