An informational meeting on frac sand mining is Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Decorah High School auditorium.
The meeting will inform people about the possible mining of sand used in the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") process in search of natural gas and oil. The sand deposits in parts of Winneshiek County can be used in places like Pennsylvania, Texas and North Dakota. Wisconsin and Minnesota are already seeing considerable open pit mining of the sand, and a group in Allamakee County has proposed an 18-month moratorium on new permits for mining while the county has time to research the practice.
The one-hour meeting will include information about the geology of Northeast Iowa, the impact of mining activities on public roads and bridges, and possible public health issues arising from sand-mining activities. An update of the situation in Allamakee County will also be presented.
