The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors is asking the Winneshiek County Planning and Zoning Commission to weigh in on frac-sand mining.
At its regular meeting Monday morning, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution asking the P&Z to provide input on the adoption of a moratorium on the consideration and/or approval of conditional use permits for industrial frac-sand mining. (Chairman John Logsdon was absent.)
A moratorium, the duration of which has yet to be determined, would be used to further study how the county can modify its comprehensive plan to protect its residents from the negative effects of frac sand mining, while respecting existing businesses which make their money mining sand for agricultural bedding and road construction use.
