ArtHaus is presenting a Poetry Slam at the Elks Lodge Friday, April 21, at 8 p.m. (doors will open at 7 p.m.).

Tickets are $5/$3 for students. The event is sponsored by Dragonfly Books.

ArtHaus Poetry Slams are lively spoken-word events that are open to all to attend and welcome members of the community to share with audiences.

Friday’s featured artist is Athena Kildegaard, a lecturer at the University of Minnesota. Her works include “Cloves & Honey” and her recent collection, “Ventriloquy.”

Kildegaard lives in Morris, Minn., on the pothole prairie, where she teaches at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Her poems have appeared in textbooks, anthologies and journals. They've been read by Garrison Keillor on The Writer's Almanac, one has been made into a film by a team of Luther students, and others have been set to music to be sung by soloists and by choirs.

She is the author of four books of poetry, and her fifth is due out next year from Tinderbox Editions. Kildegaard has read poetry on the back porch, in a bowling alley, on the radio, over the phone and in the privacy of her study, as well as at The Loft in Minneapolis and other more traditional venues.

A Slam evening is divided into three parts: Featured Artist, Original Voices and the Slam itself.

“Original Voices” offers an opportunity to perform two minutes or less of poetry, written by the performer or the performer’s favorite poet, in a non-competitive lineup.

After a brief intermission, the night concludes with “The Slam,” where participants perform two minutes or less of original poetry in a high-spirited, good-natured contest, complete with applause-o-meter and prizes; memorization is encouraged as performance and commitment are valued as much as the quality of the poem.
Those wishing to perform in “Original Voices” or to compete in “The Slam” should visit ArtHaus’ website at arthausdecorah.org, to reserve a performance spot in advance.
