Dear Editor:

During these days of school shootings and other mayhem emanating from the muzzles of semi-automatic assault weapons, I really wish we could resurrect James Madison from the dead to get his views on the current gun control debate.

Madison was known as the father of the Bill of Rights. He penned the first 10 amendments to the Constitution including the sacrosanct 2nd Amendment that guarantees the right of citizens to bear arms because a well armed and well regulated militia is "the best security of a free country."

When the Bill of Rights was ratified by the states in 1791, the militia's weapon of choice was the single- shot musket that had the capacity to fire only about three rounds a minute - depending on the skill of the person reloading it. The weapon's accuracy was also inconsistent.
