For the second straight year, the Turkey Valley girls basketball team has finished as the Class 1A runners-up.
The No. 2 Trojans (22-3) fell to No. 1 Springville (25-2) 45-36 Friday night in the Class 1A finals at Wells Fargo Arena. It’s the second year in a row the Trojans have fallen to Springville in the finals.
After falling behind 17-11 at halftime, the Trojans looked to make a move in the third. However, a stout Oriole defense put on a show as the Trojans fell behind by 30-17 with a quarter remaining.
Fans were treated to a show in the fourth. A three-point play by Shelby Reicks, following by a score by Sadie Nymeyer and another by Elli Winter put it at 30-25 with 5:30 remaining. After an Oriole score, Nymeyer hit a three to put it at 33-28 with four minutes left. Oriole Madi Wagaman hit a two, with Nymeyer answering with another three, to put the score at 35-31 with 1:58 left. However, that was as close as they’d get. Rylee Menset hit a deuce, then two free throws, to make it 39-31. S. Reicks scored, but Nichole Kane answered with two free throws to put the score at 41-34. Morgen Kuennen put up a shot, and Alyssa Jaeger hit 1-of-2 free throws for Springville to make it 42-36 with 43.9 left. The Trojans had a chance to cut into the lead again, but Springville’s defense was too much down the end.
Springville’s Nachazel, who was named the captain of the Class 1A all-tournament team, led the way with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
S. Reicks finished her Turkey Valley career with 13 points. She was named to the all-tournament team for the second year in a row. Nymeyer put up 13 points for the Trojans.
