Fall seed harvests are a favorite among Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation volunteers - cooler weather, prairie ridges and camaderie generally make for a pleasant fall morning. This time, we invite you, your family and friends to join us out on the beautiful Heritage Valley. Children especially welcome- we want to share the magic of the prairie with all ages! Unrivaled in its scope, the 1,182-acre Heritage Valley site enfolds more than three miles of the Upper Iowa River. It offers dramatic views from goat prairies to floodplains, healthy forests to prairie- as far as the eye can see, all managed primarily for native plants and wildlife. More than 1,100 species of flora and fauna have been found here! While you're in the area, check out some local attractions, like the Seed Savers Exchange, Effigy Mounds, or Yellow River State Forest — all within 30 miles of Heritage Valley! What: We seek people to hand-harvest prairie seed on two prairies located on Heritage Valley. Mechanical harvesters can't work on this steep/uneven terrain. When: Saturday, October 1 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Where: Heritage Valley, an INHF-owned property in Allamakee County. From Waukon: 1. Go north on Hwy 76/9th St. NW out of Waukon. 2. In ~7 miles, take a left onto Iverson Bridge Rd. Go past Sandpiper Rd. 3. At the first "Y" in the road, go left onto Ellingson Bridge Dr. 4. At the 2nd "Y", go right to stay on Ellingson Bridge Dr. Go over the river and just after Red Bud Dr., look for an INHF sign. The driveway will be on the left side of the road. Details: No experience necessary. All equipment provided. Please wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring a re-fillable water bottle. Please plan to stay for a social gathering following the event! RSVP Preferred! To RSVP or with Questions, Contact Mary Runkel, INHF Volunteer Coordinator at mrunkel@inhf.org or 515-288-1846 ext. 17.
