Hendrix College men's soccer head coach Doug Mello, a former Luther coach, picked up his 700th career victory as the Warriors (3-0-1) topped LeTourneau University (0-4) 4-0 at home Saturday evening.
Mello, in his fifth season at Hendrix and 36th as a head collegiate soccer coach, has won 418 games while coaching men's teams (32 at Hendrix) and another 282 while coaching women in his storied career. He has also coached 1,126 collegiate contests, more than anyone else in history.
In 35 years, Mello has a combined men's and women's record of 697-373-52 for a winning percentage of .644. Entering the season, Mello's 415 men's victories ranks 25th all-time in all divisions of NCAA and 10th among Division III coaches. His 282 women's wins is 29th in all divisions and 13th in Division III.
Mello joined the Warriors after serving as the head men's and women's soccer coach for 18 years at Luther College. He also served as the events coordinator and physical education instructor at Luther.
During his time with the Norse, his men's team won six Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles, made five NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances (Elite Eight - 1995, 2001) and tallied a 240-119-13 overall record.
His women's team won three IIAC Championships and accumulated a 219-120-26 overall record.
