The Luther College softball team ranks eighth in the 2013 Top 10 All-Academic Teams for NCAA Division III, according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Luther compiled a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.526.
With this honor, Luther became the only team in NCAA III that finished the 2013 season ranked in the Top 10 All-Academic Team list and the NFCA Division III Top 25 Final Poll released May 29, where the Norse were ranked sixth.
The NFCA also announced that nine members of the team were named 2013 Scholar Athletes. To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must have obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale, at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year.
The 2013 NFCA Scholar Athletes and the class they were in last season are: seniors Shari Huber (Eldrige) and Elisa Smith (Mounds View, Minn.); juniors Kelsey Bies (Maple Grove, Minn.), Becca Girvan (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kayla Hatting (LeMars); sophomores Alise Miller (Iowa City) and Kelsey Rose (Bettendorf); and freshman Paige Lobdell (Sterling, Ill.) and Lindsey Uphoff (Prior Lake, Minn.)
During the 2013 campaign, Head Coach Renae Hartl led Luther to an overall record of 33-11 and a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA III National Finals, placing fifth. The national tournament appearance was the 14th in school history and sixth in the last seven years. Hartl, who will begin her 13th season this year, has a career record of 363-147 for a winning percentage of .712.
