The Turkey Valley volleyball team is looking to break its trend.
The Trojans finished in third in the Upper Iowa Conference last year, a place they've become accustomed to. This year the Trojans are aiming high, shooting for the top of the conference.
Looking to put a team together that can do that is Head Coach Tammy Vrzak. Vrzak has 22 years of coaching experience, with eight at the head spot. Jackie Novotny will be the junior varsity coach. She has 18 years experience. Mindi Watters is the junior high coach.
A good season
The Trojans of 2012 had six returning letter winners and several new faces on the team. However, the team gelled early. They ran through the Upper Iowa Conference, finishing third with an 8-2 record. Their only conference losses came to North Fayette and Sumner-Fred, who finished ahead of the Trojans in the standings.
In the postseason, they took care of Riceville 3-0 (25-5, 25-8, 25-17) in their first playoff game. The season came to an end against Class 1A No. 3 Tripoli in the regional quarterfinals. The Trojans fell 0-3 (15-25, 16-25, 12-25). They posted a 13-9 record for the season.
As a team the Trojans had 534 kills and 1,672 attack attempts. They averaged 7.85 kills per set. At the service line they had 1,315 successes in 1,405 tries, with a .936 serving efficiency. They also had 167 aces.
As a team they had 446 assists, 800 digs and 156 total blocks (128 assists, 28 solo).
