It will be busy in the wrestling room this winter as the South Winn wrestling team has 23 members out for the squad this year.
While the Warriors have the numbers, they have a lot of talent to replace from a year ago.
Looking to make the team become the best it can is Jacob Elsbernd. The former Warrior grappler, who is in his second year at the helm, will be assisted by Jason Schmelzer, Kenny Mikota and Ethan Adams.
With nine returning letter winners, last year's Warriors were a veteran group looking to punctuate the season right. They posted a 9-14 dual record. At the Upper Iowa Conference meet, the Warriors finished fourth in team standings. Four Warriors stood atop the podium at their weights. Lars Warth (138), Tanner Phillips (170), Nathan Brincks (182) and Sawyer Kuboushek (195) all finished first.
A week later at the Class 1A regional meet, the Warriors finished fifth in team standings. Individually, four wrestlers moved on. Phillips, Brincks, Kuboushek and Nick Schmelzer (220) all finished first in their bracket. Phillips, Brincks and Schmelzer won their brackets at the district meet to move on to state. Kuboushek just missed qualifying, taking third.
The Warriors had a big state tournament. Schmelzer became just the second Warrior in school history to win a state title. In addition, Brincks took fourth at 182 while Phillips went 1-2.
