Finally; area athletes shine at Decorah Relays in first outdoor meet of 2013

They weren't the ideal conditions to open the outdoor track season, but the Decorah, South Winn and Turkey Valley girls teams made the best of it Friday at the Decorah Relays.

In the end, Decorah's large squad and experience proved too much for the rest of the competition, winning the title with 195 points. South Winn came in third with 91 while Turkey Valley was fourth with 78.
The Vikings posted a strong first effort, winning 13 gold medals.
Individually, Dailen Folkedahl took the 100-meter title. The junior crossed the finish line in 13.48 seconds, winning by over 0.5 seconds.
Freshman Taylor Schuring was strong in the 800-meter run. She finished in 2:31.09, a win by nearly three seconds.
It was 1-2 for the Vikes in the 1500-meter run. Kelly Minear was the champion in 5:42.75 seconds. Teammate Gara Lonning was right behind her in second in 5:43.00.
Lonning already had a gold medal. In the first event of the night, the sophomore won the 3000-meter run in 11:59.44, winning by almost 10 seconds. Shana Kelly took third in the event in 12:27.03.
Decorah went 2-3 in the 100-meter hurdles. Tori Hartman came in second in 18.16 seconds while Molly Wettach was right behind in third in 18.38 seconds.
Continuing the trend of strong hurdling, the Vikes went 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles. Hartman was the champion in 1:10.70, with Linnea Kephart right on her heels in second in 1:11.90.
Kassie Hoyme threw away the competition in the shot put. She had a best throw of 37 feet, 9.5 inches, winning by well over 4 inches. She also took third in the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 9 inches. Teammate Jenna Iverson was third in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 4 inches.
Decorah won seven of the eight relay events.
