Five Viking harriers named academic all-state

Five members of the Decorah cross country teams were named to the 2012 Academic All-State Cross Country Team.
The awards continued to pour in for the Decorah cross country teams. In addition to both the boys and girls teams winning the Class 3A state titles, five total team members were named academic all-state. Seniors Shelby Varney, Shana Kelly, Alice Gullekson, Patrick Larson and Thomas Knobbe were five of 76 student-athletes statewide selected to receive the honor from the Iowa Association of Track Coaches.
In order to be selected, members must be a senior, have at least a 3.8 cumulative grade point average, score a 28 or higher on the ACT exam and must have qualified for the state meet or finish in the top 30 at the district meet.
Varney is the daughter of Rick and Jamey Varney. Kelly is the daughter of Mike and Lori Kelly. Gullekson is the daughter of Justin and Jeanne Gullekson.
Larson is the son of Rob and Sandy Larson. Knobbe is the son of Joe and Cheryl Knobbe.
In addition, boys coach Dennis Evelsizer was named the Class 3A boys coach of the year while girls coach Cristy Nimrod was named the Class 3A girls coach of the year. It's the second time Nimrod has earned the statewide honor (2007) while Evelsizer earned the honor for the first time in his career.
Nimrod earned district coach of the year honors in 2007 and 2011. Evelsizer was named district coach of the year in 2007 and 2011.
