The Decorah freshman football team moved to 5-3 Friday night by defeating Oelwein 40-16 at home before the varsity game.
Decorah put up 26 points in the second quarter, with a Mathew Fulhart 1-yard rush, a Jacob Roher 75-yard kickoff return, a Brent Schaeffer 13-yard reception from Paul Strand and a Strand to Blake Schmelzer 35-yard reception. Ben Leschensky converted two PATs. In the third, Brendan Numedahl added a 3-yard TD while Strand scored on a 1-yard rush. Derek Hendrickson scored the two-point run on the final TD.
"We played pretty well in a lot of phases of the game. We need to continue to work on the usual things, but we have made steady improvement all season long," said Coach Scott Pierce.
Strand converted 4-of-5 passes for 53 yards. Schaeffer had 43 yards rushing. He also had three receptions for 18 yards. On defense, Numedahl had seven tackles. Adam Hovden had six. Hendrickson had an interception while Daniel Ott made a fumble recovery.
The Vikings close the season Thursday, Oct. 25, at home against Western Dubuque, beginning at 6 p.m.
