Trailing by 10 at the half, the Decorah boys basketball team (5-3, 3-2 NEIC) made it a game in the second half Tuesday night at Cresco; however, the Class 3A No. 10 Cadets (8-0, 4-0) were able to hold off a surging Decorah team late, winning 48-42.
"This was a typical Decorah-Cresco battle in that both teams fought hard, with many lead changes, but the Cadets prevailed, going on a 14-5 run in the fourth quarter," said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
It was close from the very beginning, with Decorah taking an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cadets went on a run in the second quarter, pushing the lead to double digits at 18-28 at the half. Decorah put pressure on the Cadet offensive in the third quarter, limiting the team to six points in the frame while the offense sank shot after shot, putting up a 37-34 lead with eight minutes to go. Decorah struggled to score for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing the Cadets to retake the lead and never let go.
