Hosting the No. 1 team in Class 2A Tuesday night, the Decorah wrestling team got a chance to see the competition for the district meet.
Unfortunately, the Vikings couldn't keep pace with West Delaware, falling 53-16.
Four Vikings won their matches. At 132 pounds, Class 2A No. 8 Kellan O'Shea picked up an 11-4 decision over Beau Vaske.
It was three wins in a row in the middle weights. Hans Holkesvik continued his strong mat skills at 152 pounds, pinning Tim Tutton in just 58 seconds. Nathan Suhr kept things going at 160 pounds. He grabbed an 11-2 major decision over Jacob Teumer. Peter Kephart (170) just eeked one out. He won 3-2 over Brent Lammers.
"We know West Delaware is a very strong teamn, but we still need to work to compete at a higher level against them," said Coach Jeff Freidhof. "As always we had several moments of solid wrestling and glimpses of what we can do, but there were not enough of them connected together. We need to be well aware that our road to the state tournament will have to go through several of these Hawk wrestlers, and we have to improve before districts. It is the time of the year were everyone has to 'buy in' to the program for us to have our ultimate success."
