Getting to play in front of the home crowd for the final time this season, the Decorah boys tennis team hosted Oelwein and Viroqua (Wis.) Saturday at Luther.
The Vikes played Oelwein in the morning, winning 8-1, then finished the afternoon with a 6-3 win over Viroqua.
A solid morning
The Vikings picked up five wins in the singles matches in the morning. At No. 2, Caleb Ulring knocked off Grant McMillen 5-0, 5-0. It was a 5-1, 5-0 win for Brett LaRue over Trevor Rau at the No. 3 spot. Karl Sand picked up a 5-0, 5-2 win over Kyle Woodraska. It took a super tiebreaker to get a win at the No. 5 position; however, Patrick Murphy came back to win 0-5, 5-0, (10-8). At No. 6, Miles Smith defeated Victor Kalb 5-4, 3-5, (10-8).
It was a clean sweep in doubles. T.J. Misseldine and C.J. Cliff combined at the No. 1 spot to defeat McMillen and Rau 5-2, 5-2. It was a 5-0, 5-1 win for Ryan Hageman and Ulring at the No. 2 spot over Jacob Mohlis and Fernando Gimenez. LaRue and Sand swept Woodraska and Kalb 5-0, 5-0.
"Against Oelwein the guys pretty much took care of business except at No. 1, 5 and 6," said Coach Reg Laursen. "At No. 5 and 6 Patrick and Miles did yomans work in securing their wins. Ryan ran into a hard-serving Mohlis. The fast surface in the Luther SRC was to Ryan's disadvantage. Caleb played very well. His lightning quickness served him well."
