The Decorah wrestling team kicked off the home portion of the schedule Thursday night and also traveled across the border to take part in a tournament Saturday.

Tough night

Thursday night the Vikings hosted Class 3A No. 5 Waverly-Shell Rock. The Go-Hawks showed why they are ranked in the class by defeating Decorah 54-18.

"Waverly-Shell Rock showed us as a program that we have a lot of work to do. We have to utilize every minute of training we have to get better," said Coach Jeff Freidhof.

Only three Vikings picked up victories. Peter Kephart picked up the first points for Decorah on the night. At 182 pounds, the senior pinned Jamiir Moore in just 33 seconds.

At heavyweight, Austin Ashbacher, ranked No. 10 in Class 2A, pinned Sean Lord in 3:41.

Carter Hubka grabbed the final Decorah victory of the night. He pinned Logan Derifield in 2:51.

Second place

Saturday the Vikings took two teams to the Wolves Holiday Classic, hosted by Fillmore, Minn.

The Decorah varsity team finished second with 166 points. The red team took 11th with 48.5 points.
