South Winn's two wrestlers have advanced to the Class 1A state wrestling quarterfinals while Turkey Valley's lone grappler will need to win in the consolation bracket to move on.
South Winn's Colton Hageman (170) and Chris Brincks (182) both won their first round matches while Turkey Valley's Luke Kuennen (220) lost his.
Hageman battled Mason Metink of Woodbine (37-6) in the first round. Hageman took a 2-0 lead after the first period. He fell behind 2-3 in the second before getting an escape and a take down. He held on for the 7-6 win. Hageman (28-5) faces Koy Schneider (Wilton, 38-5) in the quarterfinals Friday morning.
Brincks faced Colton Story of East Mills (39-12) in the first round. It was all Brincks. He led 2-0 after the first, then gabbed an escape and a take down in the second. Up 8-0 in the third, Brincks pinned Story in 4:38 to advance. He wrestles Cade Jones of West Branch (41-1) Friday.
Kuennen fell in his first round match. Facing Ryley Howell of Wapello (33-2), Kuennen scored first on a take down. He allowed the escape late in the first to lead 2-1. In the second, he fell behind 2-3 before getting an escape to tie it. Kuennen was leading 4-3 in the third when Howell got a take down as time ticked off the clock. Kuennen will wrestle Cody Cain of Guthrie Center (38-12) in the consolation bracket later this morning.
