Decorah's Josey Jewell is one of five finalists for the Gazette and IowaPrepSports.com 2013 male Athlete of the Year award.
Started in 1983, the award, bestowed to one male and one female, honor the journalism career of the late Jack Ogden, a former Gazette sportswriter.
Finalists are Jace Hanna, Cedar Rapids Prairie; Jewell; Cade Jones, West Branch; Jeremy Morgan, Iowa City West; and Reggie Schulte, Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Female finalists are Kayla Armstrong, Xavier; Ally Disterhoft, Iowa City West; Mickey Hansche, Iowa City High; Daneshia Snitker, Waukon; and Madison Weekly, Benton Community.
Jewell is a four-sport athlete and was named the Gazette/KCRG football player of the year. Jewell rushed for 1,314 yards and 21 touchdowns while making 100 tackles in football. In addition, Jewell finished fourth in the discus at state, played on the basketball team and is a member of the baseball team. This fall he will play football for the University of Iowa.
The winners will be announced Sunday.
