It wasn't pretty but a win is a win for the Class 3A No. 1 Decorah football team (7-0, 4-0) as the Vikes defeated Crestwood (3-4, 3-1) 35-15 Friday night in Cresco.
The win clinches a playoff berth for the Vikes and puts them solely in control for the No. 1 seed as the only team that's undefeated in district play.
"I think it's a nice, little bonus kind of a thing so to speak, knowing that we've already got that locked up," said Head Coach Bill Post. "But the guys have got a goal to win the district. They've still got a couple of games to go to get that accomplished."
Friday's game didn't go exactly as planned for the Vikes. After holding the Cadets on their first drive, the Vikes went to the ground, using both Josey Jewell and Holt Johansen. Nine plays after the drive started, Jewell burst through a hole and went 1 yard for the score. The Josh Lee extra point made it 7-0 with 6:35 to go in the quarter.
On Decorah's next possession, the Vikes went back to the ground, with Jewell going 42 yards for his second score and a 14-0 lead.
The Cadets made a move through the air as the quarter was coming to a close when Kolter Freidhof found Ryan Kreitzer for the 56-yard pass and the score. The Cadets went for the two-point play and converted it on a Freidhof rush to make it 14-8.
