It was a chilly start to the Decorah girls tennis team's season Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Tournament; however, the Vikes found a way to warm themselves up with some strong play on the courts.
In the rain-shortened tournament, the Vikes took third with 11 points. Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Waterloo West tied for first with 17 points.
"The tourney has always been a great way to start the season and a decent indicator of where the team is at this point," said Coach Larry Berland. "It is no secret this spring has provided a late start in getting outside, and that has hurt us in our preparation. But, except for a few teams in other areas of Iowa, all teams have had the same predicament when it comes to the weather.
"The 2012 girls' team came within a tiebreaker of qualifying for the state meet last year, and all of the girls responsible for that great finish have graduated. Decorah is ripe with inexperience, and it is so exciting to see where the girls are right now and visualize where they might be by the end of the season. They say the United States is a country of opportunity. Well, the Decorah girl's tennis team is a team of opportunity this year. The competition for positions is wide open."
