The Decorah girls swim team finished the season with a bang Saturday in Marshalltown at the state swim meet.
The team sent three events to state.
For the third year in a row, Ames won the team title with 274 points. Pleasant Valley was second with 224 points.
Martinek does well
Taylor Martinek, a sophomore at Crestwood who swims for the Vikes, scored the only points of the afternoon. Competing in the 100-yard backstroke, which was her second event in a row, Martinek put together a strong race, finishing 15th overall in 1:01.28. She swam the first 50 meters in 29.59, with the second in 31.69. Her seed time was 1:01.87. Last year Martinek finished 19th in 1:03.11.
Sara Bentley of Ames won the event in 56.89 seconds.
Also in the pool
Two relays also took to the pool Saturday.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Monica Tappe, Martinek, Kathryn Appler and Katelyn Yee competed for the Vikes. They combined for a 19th place finish in 1:43.57. Tappe swam her leg in 26.84, Martinek in 25.48, Appler in 25.94 and Yee in 25.21. Their seed time was 1:44.37.
Pleasant Valley was the winner in the event.
In the final race of the day, Jennison Jenkins, Yee, Martinek and Appler competed in the 400-yard freestyle. The quartet finished in 3:54.90, taking 24th. They posted splits of 1:01.01, 57.37, 59.56 and 56.96.
Pleasant Valley won the event.
The Vikes have lots to build off for next year as they return a large contingent of the 2012 squad, including four with state experience.
