Three Decorah football players were honored for their dedication to their school work and their work on the field.

Seniors James Ostlie, Michael Peter and Peter Kephart were all named Academic All-State from the Iowa Football Coaches Association.

In order to be honored, athletes must be a senior starter, have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or better following their junior year, and be involved in other extra-curricular activities.

Ostlie was named to the Gazette/KCRG offensive unit, first team by the Iowa Newspapers Association, Des Moines Register and the district. Playing on the offensive line Ostlie helped the Viking offense gain 4,790 total yards. On defense at linebacker, he finished tied for third overall in tackles with 70 (43 solo, 27 assists).

Peter was named first team all-district. On defense he collected 34 total tackles (20 solo and 14 assists), with 10.5 tackles for a loss and nine solo sacks. Offensively he led the team in receptions with 14 for 316 total yards. He had a 22.6 yards per catch average while scoring nine touchdowns.

Kephart was the center for the Vikes, helping the team pick up 4,790 yards of total offense. Defensively Kephart had 22 total tackles (14 solo, eight assists).

Ostlie is the son of Paul and Lori Ostlie. Peter is the son of Tim and Sandra Peter. Kephart is the son of Jim and Ann Kephart.

In addition, Head Coach Bill Post was named the Class 3A football coach of the year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. Post and the Vikings won the Class 3A state title this fall. It was the first for Post and fifth overall for the Vikings.
