In two tries over the weekend, the Decorah boys basketball team (5-5, 1-4 NEIC) picked up one conference victory.
It took an extra four minutes for a champion to be determined Friday as the Vikes fell at Charles City (3-7, 2-3 NEIC) 47-50.
After the first eight minutes of play, the Vikes trailed by just one, 10-11. After falling behind by four, 10-14, Decorah came back strong to take a 17-16 halftime lead. That lead ballooned in the third, with Decorah going up by eight at 29-21 with eight minutes left. Decorah saw the Comets storm back in the final frame to tie it at 41-all, forcing extra time. The Comets took the lead right away in the final frame and didn't let the Vikings come back.
"We need to be able to understand how to play with a lead late in games and close out teams," said Coach Jonathan Carlson. "Our kids will improve and learn from this loss."
Drake Schuring poured in 15 points to lead the team. Holt Johansen and James Lange were both in double figures with 10 points each. Chris Hartman added seven points.
