The Decorah wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season this past weekend, wrestling in a triangular Thursday and at the West Delaware Invite Saturday.
It was a big opening night for the Viking grapplers as Decorah went 2-0 on the road. The Vikes knocked off Class 2A No. 5 Union-La Porte City 48-17, then defeated Vinton-Shellsburg 63-15.
Seven Vikings went 2-0, with two more winning their only match and receiving a forfeit in the other. Senior Andy Hovden, who's ranked No. 3 in Class 2A at 220 pounds, threw Jace Hadachek of Union in 1:29, then threw Vinton-Shellsburg's Carl Zink in 1:22. At 195, Tyler Hovey pinned Alex Krall (Union) in 1:58 and Ben Wood (Vinton-Shellsburg) in 1:25.
At 113, Joe Knoke won a 4-2 decision over Union's Blake Havran and pinned Nolan Hendrickson in 2:40. Dirk Clark (120) started his season with a pin over Union's Ted Tecklenburg in 4:34 and pinned Navon Dunlap in 1:58. Junior Kellan O'Shea, who is ranked No. 10 in Class 2A at 126 pounds, won 12-6 over Trevor McLaughlin of Union and 7-4 over Nick Hyland.
Senior Hans Holkesvik threw Vinton-Shellsburg's Riley Hopkins in 1:29 and picked up an 8-6 decision over Jacob Holschlag. A weight class up, Nathan Suhr won a close 15-14 decision over Union's Austin Dengler and threw Austin Grauberger-Heims in 3:35.
McKinley McCabe (170) threw Union's Christian Gray in 5:53 while Peter Kephart (182) threw Tanner Hilton (2:55). Both received forfeits against Vinton-Shellsburg.
