Big night for Velky
Waverly-Shell Rock's Jake Velky put up 33 points Friday night in Decorah as the Class 3A No. 8 Go-Hawks (16-4, 9-2 NEIC) defeated Decorah 59-42.
Velky had the bulk of those 33 in the first half, giving the Go-Hawks a lead they wouldn't let go of.
The Decorah gym was rocking to start the game, with the seniors being honored prior to tip-off. The Vikes came out strong, keeping pace with the high-powered Go-Hawks. The Vikes fell behind by five early but came back to make it just a three-point deficit at the first quarter break, 10-13. Decorah came out strong in the second, going on a mini-run to open the frame. Decorah took a lead and went up by as many as six at 21-15 before the Go-Hawks found an answer. Using Velky and getting to the free throw line, the Go-Hawks came back to retake the lead and go into the locker room up 33-26.
