t was a big spring for the Decorah sports teams as both the boys track team and boys golf team claimed state titles. The Decorah girls tennis team broke in the new tennis courts Thursday, facing Dubuque Wahlert. Wahlert, which is coached by former Decorah standout Zach Fromm, defeated the Vikes 7-2.
Getting on the outdoor track for the first time of the season, the Decorah boys track team easily took the Waukon early bird invite. The Vikes secured 212 points. Kyle Kregel and Jacob Humpal both won two events.
It was a good day on the track for the Turkey Valley boys and girls track teams. The girls claimed six golds at Sumner-Fred while the boys team just edged the Cougars for first place.
April 5 Decorah Journal
South Winn's Colton Hageman and the 4x100 of Jared Schroeder, Jordan Rommes, Matt Stee and Hageman all won gold medals at the Decorah quad. The Vikings won their home meet and claimed 12 gold medals.
The Decorah soccer team suffered a heartbreaker in the first game of the season, falling to Dubuque Senior 1-0.
All eyes on the prize. The Decorah boys golf team returns all six of its members from the team that finished third at state a year ago.
Records fell for the Decorah girls track team at the Dubuque Senior relays. Jackie Hoyme threw a school record 132 feet, 2 inches in the discus while Marea Holkesvik broke the meet record in the 400-meter hurdles.
April 10 Public Opinion
South Winn golfers Caitlin Holien and Ashley Bushman split the medal against MFL, both shooting 48s. Jared Holien was the medalist on the boys side, firing a 41.
The Decorah girls soccer team picked up its first two victories of the season. It blanked Onalaska 1-0, then threw a shutout over Dubuque Senior 3-0.
Erica Bjelland continued her undefeated season by winning her flight at the Top Gun Tournament. Decorah was second overall, behind only Waterloo Columbus, last year's Class 1A team champion.
Turkey Valley's Carson Bruess claimed his third medal of the season as the Trojans defeated West Central in the boys golf meet. Josie Einwalter tied for the medal on the girls' side.
