Award-winning author Mike Mullin is coming to Northeast Iowa for a two-day trip Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4, sponsored by Dragonfly Books.

The Indianapolis-based writer is visiting four area schools, hosting a Writers’ Workshop open to all writers and celebrating his latest novel, “Sunrise,” with a “Sunrise Party at Nightfall.”

Mullin is the author of the acclaimed Ashfall series. Imagine a world where your life has been disrupted by a natural disaster, where there’s an endless winter and where food and shelter is extremely scarce.

Mullin creates such an environment in his young adult trilogy set in northeast Iowa/southwest Wisconsin. “Sunrise” is the epic finale in his Ashfall series.

School visits, workshop
Mullin will spend his days visiting four area schools: Oelwein Middle School, South Winneshiek Middle School, Waukon High School  and Decorah High School.

Mullin also will lead a Writers’ Workshop Thursday, April 3, from 7-9 pm.

“We are thrilled to offer this experience with Mike,” says Dragonfly Books owner Kate Rattenborg. “Decorah has such a strong community of writers. This is a great way we can continue to support this part of our community.”

The Writers’ Workshop is open to adults ages 16 and up. The cost is $25 and includes a signed, hardcover copy of “Sunrise.”

Party at nightfall
As a celebration of the final book in Mullin’s trilogy, Dragonfly Books also is hosting a “Sunrise Party at Nightfall” Friday, April 4, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to stop by the bookstore for an evening of sparkling beverages, post-apocalyptic snacks, taekwondo demonstrations, dancing alligators ... and Mullin promises he will tell as many tales as possible for our amusement. Book signing to follow.

About the author
Mullin first discovered he could make money writing in sixth grade. His teacher, Mrs. Brannon, occasionally paid students for using unusual words.

His first sale as a writer earned 10 cents for one word: tenacious. Since then, Mike has always been involved with literature. One of his early jobs was shelving books at Central Library in Indianapolis.

Later, he paid his way through graduate school in part by serving as a reference assistant for Indiana University’s library. He has worked in his mother’s business, Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, for more than 20 years, serving at various times as a store manager, buyer, school and library salesperson and marketing consultant. Mullin holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and her three cats.

Mullin’s first novel, “Ashfall” was named one of the top five young adult novels of 2011 by National Public Radio, a Best Teen Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews and a New Voices selection by the American Booksellers Association.

“Sunrise” is an Indie Next Spring 2014 Selection by the American Booksellers Association and a Kirkus Starred Review.
