The Decorah Public Library history book group will discuss Tony Horwitz’s “Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid that Sparked the Civil War” Thursday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the library.

Books are currently available for checkout at the front desk.

In “Midnight Rising,” bestselling author Tony Horwitz tells the electrifying tale of the daring insurrection that put America on the path to bloody war. Plotted in secret, launched in the dark, John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry ruptured the union between North and South. Yet few Americans know the true story of the militant idealists who invaded Virginia before the Civil War.

Now, Horwitz paints Brown’s insurrection in vivid color, illuminating a nation on the brink of explosive conflict.

The history book group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third or fourth Thursday of each month; newcomers are always encouraged to join in. June discussion topic will be Erik Larson’s In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin (date TBA).
