ArtHaus in Decorah was recently awarded a grant by the Iowa Arts Council to implement New Voices in Public Art.

The grant provides ArtHaus with the ability to teach a select group of artists mural and business skills in a 10-hour class done over zoom and 10 hours hand-on socially distanced painting. The class is free and artists will be paid a $250 stipend on completion of the class. All skill levels of artists may apply at by Aug. 15.

Women, minorities and artists working with a disability are strongly encouraged to apply.

Businesses are also a key component to the New Voices in Public Art project. ArtHaus is relying on local businesses and business owners interested in seeing a mural either on the inside or outside of the property they own to request a mural proposal from this class.

The mural request form needs to be completed by Aug. 15 and can also be found at Businesses will submit their dimensions and ideas and at the end of September the artists will submit proposals to the businesses. Several artists may submit proposals on the same project. The businesses will then get to choose which artist they want to work with to see the work completed and complete a contract with them.

Businesses that request a mural by Aug. 15 get added cost savings to implementing a mural because ArtHaus will provide the artist in the class with non-perishable materials to use for the year and keep a bank of leftover mural paint that they can utilize.

"We are super excited to be a springboard for new artists in the Decorah area," says ArtHaus Director, Shannon Dallenbach Durbin. "We look forward to creating great partnerships and seeing fabulous new murals in Decorah."
