For 15 years, Jim and Ann Kephart shepherded the Nordic Dancers as directors of the program. “I still remember them dancing around our living room when as I was in fifth grade as they were readying themselves for their first year as directors with my brother Peter’s group. I wasn’t at all surprised when they took on directorship of my brother Andrew’s group as well. For years they scrambled between Nordic Dancing, sound systems up and down Water Street for Kephart’s, working booths for Sunflower and Varme Pølse, DHS Cross Country and more—and still kept tabs on their four children throughout the Nordic Fest weekend. They were some of the first people to start set up for the Fest, and often the last to leave,” said their daughter Alli. The Kepharts were nominated by several different community members and the resounding feeling was that Jim and Ann embody the spirit of Decorah and Nordic Fest. These two are ambassadors not only for Nordic Dancers, but also for Nordic Fest and the City of Decorah. Pillars of the community, the Kepharts have also changed lives and encouraged the musical interests of so many youth in the community through their store, Kephart’s Music/West Music.
