Going on the road Monday, the Turkey Valley baseball team (0-11, 0-4 UIC) fell in a conference doubleheader to MFL MarMac (9-3, 4-2 UIC).

In the first game, the Trojans fell, 13-8. The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead after two innings before the Trojans got on the board. A trio of walks to Carson Busta, Simon Schmitt and Garrett Kurtenbach in the third inning set the stage for TV to score three runs. Turkey Valley knotted the score in the top of the fourth after Busta’s second walk of the game, a Schmitt single, Kurtenbach walk and a Kannon Leuenberger single.

Then disaster struck. The Bulldogs took advantage of four straight walks before pounding out a single and double, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. TV tried to recover with a Kurtenbach run in the sixth and tacked on three in the seventh, but fell short of the comeback.

“We played better and put a few runs on the board, but we still need to execute better in all facets of the game,” said Coach Dan Stepan.

Elliott Dietzenbach took the loss on the mound. He threw the first three innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits. Kalvin Langreck and Kade Kruse climbed the hill in relief.

Turkey Valley had seven hits. Leuenberger accounted for three of them with three RBI. With one single each were Dietzenbach, Schmitt, Eli Nymeyer and Seth Huinker.

The Bulldogs exploded for 12 runs in game two, ending the contest in five frames.

“We struggled a couple of innings and gave up some crooked numbers,” said Coach Stepan.

Turkey Valley led 2-1 going into the bottom of the second and fourth innings, when MFL MarMac took advantage of several Trojan miscues.

The Trojans had five hits with singles by Schmitt, Leuenberger, Nymeyer, Langreck and Ethan Leibold.

Leuenberger and Sam Kout threw for Turkey Valley.

Wednesday, the Trojans were at South Winn. Turkey Valley’s next action will be at home Monday, June 17, versus Postville and Tuesday, June 18, versus Oelwein. Both home contests are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
