Decorah eagle cam goes viral as eaglets hatch

Live images from the Decorah bald eagle cam, which has been installed at an eagle's nest at the Decorah Fish Hatchery for the past several years, have officially gone viral.
The Raptor Resource Project has provided a live feed of the nest since early this year. It's been viewed 11 million times from 130 countries since the first egg was laid in February and over the weekend could be seen on the national news.
Sunday night, during the NBC Nightly News, Lester Holt reported two of the eaglets had hatched over the weekend and that the site has continually had more than 100,000 viewers. That night, nearly 150,000 people were watching as the young eagles were fed by their parents. CBS Sunday Morning also aired a story.
A third egg is expected to hatch any day.
The eagles built the nest 80 feet high in a tree above the trout stream across the street from the Hatchery four years ago. Last year, Luther College hosted the site streaming the live video, but heavy usage caused the service to repeatedly crash.
A new camera was installed early this year that provides a crystal clear view of the eagles' activities in the nest, and a private company, which runs short advertisements, now hosts the site.
"These eagle cams touch many people in many different ways ... I'm amazed," Bob Anderson of Decorah, director of the Raptor Resource Project, told CBS.
Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks and owls. It helps establish and strengthen breeding populations of these raptors by creating, improving and maintaining nests and nest sites.
The Project's mission is to preserve and strengthen raptor populations, to expand participation in raptor preservation and to help foster the next generation of preservationists.

I am enjoying watching the Eagles and the babies. In fact I have become addicted to the cam! I have emailed the site to many friends across the country. I am a little concerned however--it seems that the high winds that I have noticed may have taken a piece off the nest? I could be mistaken but the nest does not look as round as it did? I got really worried - a chick could possibly fall out of nest! Thanks for all the great moments!

Wonderful. Thanks a lot. Many years ago before I retired I often used a saying in meetings, etc. "The eagle does not capture flies." Now I really know what I meant.

I am so thrilled about this project. I am the media specialist at a middle school in P.G. county, MD whose mascot is the eagle. We can't get enough of it. I think I'm the eagles' biggest fan. I stay awake at night to watch them sleep. What an awesome reflection on our creator to see how we and the creatures wonderfully made.
