A special runoff election will be conducted later this year to fill the vacancy in the Decorah City Council's 5th Ward.

The action comes after the Council had previously voted to appoint a Councilperson rather than holding a special election.

A campaign was conducted in Ward 5, and enough signatures were obtained to force the runoff election .Fifty-three signatures were required, and approximately 60 valid signatures were obtained.

Earlier this month, Decorah City Council had appointed Steven Zittergruen to fill the Ward 5 post after Johanna Bergan resigned due to moving out of the Ward she represented for three years. She had one year remaining of her term. Council members voted in September to appoint a Ward 5 resident to fill the vacancy, as it would save the city approximately $2,500 in costs associated with holding a special election.

Winneshiek County Auditor Ben Steines notes that the Special Election to fill the vacancy on the Decorah City Council Ward 5, will be held Dec. 8. Candidates will need to file Nominating Petitions with 10 signatures of Ward 5 eligible electors and an Affidavit of Candidacy with the County Auditor by Nov. 13. Absentee voting for this election will start as soon as possible after candidate filing, when the ballots have been programmed and printed. Voting on Dec. 8 will be available at one polling station (yet to be determined) from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
