The Decorah Fire Department was called to a possible attic fire at Ruth Kath’s residence at 502 John Street in Decorah Tuesday afternoon.
When firefighters arrived at about 3:40 p.m., smoke was venting through the attic. Firefighters began an interior attack on the second floor of the two-story home as fire began to show through the eaves in the rear of the house.
The upstairs sustained heavy fire damage before the flames were extinguished, according to a press release. The rest of the house sustained smoke and water damage. Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Decorah Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Calmar Fire Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance, Decorah Police Department, Decorah Street Department, Winneshiek Emergency Management Agency, Black Hills Energy and Alliant Energy.
