The beloved story of Winnie-the-Pooh will come alive on the New Minowa Players stage beginning this weekend.

Based on the books by A.A. Milne, the musical will feature Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Woods.

“Winnie-the-Pooh” will be performed at the NMP theater at 906 S. Mill Street.

There will be seven performances since the family show usually draws a large crowd. Show dates are Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Jan. 25 at both 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are going fast. They can be purchased online at
newminowaplayers.org/buy-tickets. They are also for sale at Oneota Co-op in downtown Decorah. Finally, any remaining tickets will be available at the NMP theater an hour before each performance.

For those who wish to buy tickets just before the performance, be sure to come early to ensure getting a seat for this popular musical.

As the show begins, Winnie-the-Pooh is singing happily, “Isn’t it funny how a bear likes honey?” That’s when the trouble begins. Kanga comes to the forest with soap for baths and spoonfuls of Strengthening Medicine.

In this medley of Pooh adventures, Pooh gets stuck in a tree, Owl is convinced that Kanga has a bottle of poison, Piglet is taken and transformed by Kanga, and Pooh gets stuck in his doorway. Honey may have something to do with that.

Sheryl Scheffert will direct “Winnie-the-Pooh,” and Troy Downey will serve as voice and music director.

The production will have a stellar cast, including Evan Rowley as Christopher Robin and David Mendez as Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh’s friend Piglet will be played by Cydney Weitzel. Kathy Schwartzhoff will play the role of Kanga who is busy with soaps and medicine and taking care of little Roo, played by Rebecca Franksain.

Other cast members include Kris Larson as Owl, Rick Scheffert as Eeyore, Jon Thompson as Skunk, and Doris Pfister-Thompson as Rabbit. Rabbit’s friends and relations are played by Hannah Arendt, Annika Keefe, Adina Scardina, Grace Stockman, and Jillian Voltz.

Lyrics for the musical come directly from A.A. Milne, with just a few adaptations by Kristin Sergel. The music was written by Allan Friedman.

“Winnie-the-Pooh” will be presented through special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing.

The performances of “Winnie-the-Pooh” would not be possible without the generous support of NMP’s season and show sponsors: Decorah Bank & Trust, Family Table Restaurant, Gallery of Tops, Mette Hammer and Sam Townswick, Iroc Web Design Services, Modish, Pizza Ranch, RocketDog Books, Rockweiler Appliance & TV, Rick and Sheryl Scheffert, Sogo Snacks and Singing Hammers Construction.
