Decorah’s Old Amory recently was listed as No. 9 out of “12 BBQ Joints in Iowa That Will Make Your Mouth Water.”
Journalist Michaela Kendall compiled the list for an Aug. 10 article on the website onlyinyourstate.com/iowa/.
“Next time you’re cravin’ some Q, head to one of these 12 BBQ joints in Iowa – they’ll be sure to keep you coming back for more,” the introduction to the article states.
Matt Henning, owner of the Old Armory, said Kendall likely visited his establishment during Nordic Fest last month because the picture she posted along with the article showed Old Armory barbecue on a paper plate. Henning said he doesn’t normally use paper plates, but did during Nordic Fest due to the quantity of people in town.
“If you go to Old Armory, I recommend you try the blueberry BBQ sauce, it's actually amazing, and the sweet potato tater tots will literally melt in your mouth. Their rib platter is quite good, too, and with their low prices, you are sure to leave fat and happy,” Kendall writes in her article.
The blueberry barbecue sauce is a fairly new concoction, according to Henning, who said he was flattered by the article.
“I’m very proud of the restaurant and my employees, and the hard work and effort that we put into providing quality food and service,” Henning said.
The other restaurants making Kendall’s list were: Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack, Iowa City, No. 1; Smokey D’s BBQ, Des Moines, No. 2; Mosley’s, Iowa City, No. 3; Wildwood Smokehouse and Saloon, Iowa City, No. 4; Jethro’s BBQ, Des Moines, No. 5; QDogs BBQ Company, Marion, No. 6; Woody’s Smoke Shack, Des Moines, No. 7; Battlecry Smokehouse, Ames, No. 8; Boxer BBQ Co., Council Bluffs, No. 10; Vinny’s BBQ, Dakota City, No. 11; and Smokehouse Grille At the Blue Mountain Culinary Emporium, Orange City, No. 12.
