Two bike racks were recently installed in parking spaces in downtown Decorah - one near Donlon Healthmart Pharmacy and the other in front of the Northeast Iowa Montessori School. The racks, which were installed by the Decorah Street Department, were constructed by John Condon's industrial technology class at Decorah High School. "They did a wonderful job building them," commented Decorah City Manager Chad Bird. He noted the design includes a cut out of a bicyclist. "They worked hard with the Decorah Self Supporting Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) Board including Andy Nelson and Dave Lester. It was a great partnership to have the school involved. We encourage people to use them," Bird said. The racks each hold at least eight bikes. The city plans to purchase another, "more traditional" bike rack that will be installed in front of the Alliant Energy building this summer. SSMID is paying about $1,000 toward the bike racks. With the completion of the Trout Run Trail last summer, the city has been seeing a need to provide more parking for bikes. (Photo by Sarah Strandberg)
