City officials need to consider the possibility of soliciting bids for engineering services, according to Decorah City Council member John Franzen.

He is calling for an "open discussion" of the topic.

At last week's Council meeting, Franzen requested the property committee he chairs discuss how the city contracts engineering services. Lindsay Erdman is currently the city engineer. Franzen tentatively scheduled the meeting for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in Council chambers.

However, since Council member Randy Schissel also wants the Council to discuss goals it set earlier this year, City Manager Chad Bird has suggested both goals and the city engineering services might be discussed during a work session.

"Since I've been on the Council, we've never put engineering up for bid. As a Council, we are tasked with being the best stewards of the dollar we can possibly be," Franzen told Decorah Newspapers Friday.

Franzen said there have been "behind-the-scenes discussions" of engineering services.

"If the other (Council) committees don't want to talk about it, I'm happy to talk about it in the property committee," he said.

"As we approach summer and the construction season, it's a good thing ... an open and honest discussion," Franzen added.
