The need for an additional class section at Carrie Lee Elementary will require a remodeling project at the school.

The Decorah School Board has scheduled a public hearing on the project estimated to cost $167,728 for 6 p.m. Monday, April 8. The District plans to use Physical Plant and Equipment Levy funds to pay for the work.

There are currently six third-grade classes and five fourth grade classes at Carrie Lee. Next year, there will be enough students to require six sections of both third and fourth grades. Each section has about 21 students.

The remodeling project calls for partitioning off a music room on the third floor for an additional classroom. A permanent wall will be installed, and the smaller portion of the former music room will be used for students in the English learner, or special education programs.

The equipment from a weight room on the ground level of Carrie Lee will be put into storage, and that room will become a classroom for smaller groups of students, and the music room. The project estimate, provide by Struxture Architects of Waterloo, includes furnishings.
